They are employed in both laboratory and field settings by governments, environmental consulting companies, resource and utilities companies, chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnical companies and health and educational institutions.

Job Duties for Biologists and related scientists

Biologists plan and conduct studies of the environment, and of the population, distribution, structure, and functional characteristics and behaviour of plants and animals. Biologists conduct ecological and environmental impact studies and prepare reports. They study, identify, and classify plant and animal specimens and conduct experiments in plant or animal growth, heredity, and breeding. Biologists may also prepare reports and plans for management for renewable resources. Microbiologists and cell and molecular Biologists conduct research into the structure, function, ecology, biotechnology, and genetics of micro-organisms. Microbiologists and cell and molecular Biologists conduct research into the identification, effects and control of human, plant, and animal pathogens and toxins and conduct clinical or laboratory studies to test, evaluate, and screen drugs, pharmaceuticals, and nanoparticles used in biomedical applications. They conduct molecular or biochemical studies and experiments in genetic expression, gene manipulation, and recombinant DNA technology. Microbiologists and Cell and Molecular Biologists also conduct research in biotechnology to discover, develop, and refine, and evaluate new products.

Working Conditions for Biologists and related scientists

Work in this occupation is typically performed in a structured environment, such as an office, hospital or school, or an outdoor work environment where the worker is exposed to various weather conditions. Also, the worker may be exposed to infectious bacteria and viruses that may cause illness. This could arise while investigating outbreaks of food and environment related diseases and poisonings, or while conducting microbiological tests and laboratory analyses.
